Analog & Digital
Students explore a range of animation techniques from hand-drawn flip books and 19th century animation devices to digital video editing software. Animation provides an expanded framework for thinking about the history of drawing, painting and sculpture. Through Stephen Herbert's A History of Pre Cinema students gain a framework for considering the impact of cinematic history and related concepts including Joseph Plateau’s theory of Persistence of Vision on our present screen-based experiences.. Students synthesize old and new technologies while building their own unique animation devices including thaumatropes, phekakistascopes and zoetropes.
